The colorlessness is temporary

Cornered (015/365)

In one part it’s my own grey, in the other it’s that I’m redesigning my blog based on a different WordPress theme, since I was never quite happy with the previous one. I’m now using a theme called Thematic, which is supposed to be superduperistically customizable, but for starters it’s just like how movies & TV started: no technicolor, no RGB.

So today — Henkimaa.com is black & white (& grey), just like me.

But color will return.

Perhaps tomorrow? Perhaps.

Night of the butcher knife

Or, rather, two such nights — a dream based on two actual experiences, from the beginning of the fifth chapter of Mistress of Woodland, my novel-in-progress. Goes well with my mood tonight.  (Well, okay: I’m in the grey.  This excerpt is about being in the pit.  There’s a difference.)

Dream [excerpt]

It was bedtime.  Tonight Will was the storyteller.  He didn’t need the book.  He couldn’t read yet, and besides, he knew this bedtime story by heart.

“Get the knife!” it began.  They’d locked the knives and scissors away several nights ago, all except a Swiss army knife and a Buck knife brought out from hiding from time to time to slice carrots or peel potatoes.

“Get it now!” his story went on.  “Get the knife!  Do it!”

His arms were crossed over his chest.  His hands and fingers, tucked under his arms, were met by Rachel’s hands reaching forth from under his armpits.  She held his wrists firmly in the hold Charlotte had taught her the morning after his terrible first rampage, three weeks after his arrival in Alaska.

“Get it!” he said.  “Get it now!”  He strained against her hold on his wrists.  His legs strained against Megan’s hands holding his ankles pressed to the bed.  Constrained by their strength, he turned his anger inward.  “Kill me!” he demanded.  “Get the knife!  Do it!”

Suddenly he bucked up from his heels, twisting violently in an attempt to free his legs.  But Megan held on.  He gave up and his body went slack in Rachel’s embrace.  She didn’t like this story, but she didn’t let go.  Her eyes met Megan’s.  They said nothing.  The first few nights they’d tried to soothe or reason away his violence, but there were no words to ease him where he lay.  So now they simply held on — one hour, two hours — and rode it out, night after night.

She’d gone too lax: all at once he yanked his left arm free, jackknifed his body, and slammed his skull against her breastbone.  She cried out.  She waved her right hand about, trying to recapture his left wrist.  Megan dived forward to pin him against the bed, and Rachel caught his wrist, but not before he bent down to clamp his teeth into her forearm.  She cried out, but she had his wrist and yanked it hard, pulling him upright against her chest.  Goddamn little bastard!  Shit, that hurt!

A bruise suddenly appeared on her forearm, red darkening surrealistically to lurid purple and blueblack.  Green and yellow washed in until the bruise was a near twin to the one he’d chomped into her other forearm the week before.

“A matching pair!” her supervisor exclaimed from the doorway.  Dr. Riley, passing her office on his way to teach class, glanced in.  “You need a pair of those leather gauntlets attack dog trainers use.”

She didn’t have gauntlets, but she had a firm grasp on her wrist.  “Get the knife!” she said to Megan, but Megan wouldn’t get it.  Right hand on left wrist, Rachel plunged it in anyway, thrust the non-blade with force into her belly just below her navel: once, twice.  The hole remained, that chasm in her belly containing the Milky Way shorn of all of its stars, empty of everything but her loneliness and despair.  “Get it!” she said to Megan, wanting to saw the hole from her flesh, but Megan, eyes brimful with worry and fear, didn’t know where Sharon kept the butcher knife.  “It’s in the kitchen,” Rachel told her, “right of the sink, second drawer down,” but it would be nine years before she met Megan, and Rachel was too drunk to get the knife herself.  “Do it!” she cried out, but Lori and Sharon were asleep in the back of the trailer. She lay alone in the night between the couch and the coffee table.  She didn’t really want to die, she just wanted the hole (fists plunging down on her belly) gone.  Gone.  Gone.  Gone.

At McGinley's Pub

Outside McGinley's Pub

The planned protest at McGinley’s Pub over the veto of the Anchorage equal rights ordinance by Mayor Dan Sullivan — who has a 10% interest in the pub — turned out to be not so much of a protest after all.

Discussing how to proceed, given at least three different ideas of the best way to deal with what we knew now.

Discussing how to proceed, given at least three different ideas of the best way to deal with what we knew now.

I arrived shortly after 6:30 PM to find a small group of people across the street from McGinley’s in front of the Dena’ina Convention Center, having a discussion. Other people arrived shortly after I did, but our numbers were small — no more than 20 to 25 people — and it became clear that calling a protest in the morning on the day of, on a Friday when many people already had their plans set, was perhaps not the best way to organize one. It also quickly became clear that there was some disagreement and uncertainty about what to do: some advocated for protest; others to enter the establishment and take up tables, but only buying inexpensive drinks like coffee or soda pop instead of alcohol or food that other patrons would probably buy if they had our table; others yet to take up the offer of McGinley’s managing partner Jack Lewis to hold a conversation over a Guinness.

Ultimately that’s what happened — at least for one or two of the people who showed up; while the rest of us, skeptical after the Summer of Hate and unwilling at this point to give McGinley’s our trade, waited outside and continued to talk. While we waited, one of our number sat amongst the rocks just outside the pub and arranged stones on the sidewalk into the word that probably most of all represents what we’ve been up against all summer: bigotry.

Bigotry

And then, three of our number destroyed it.

Destroying bigotry

(Would that bigotry itself was so easily gotten rid of.)

Michael

Michael Mason

At length, Michael Mason came back out and told us about his conversation with Mr. Lewis, who he found pleasant, personable, and friendly, and who explained to him his own view of matters: that, as indicated in his press release earlier in the day, Mayor Sullivan is simply an investment partner with only 10% interest in the business, and that McGinley’s is welcoming to patrons from all walks of life and has had no role whatsoever in the ordinance debate. There was a lot of skepticism, including on my part — Sullivan still derives some income from the bar, does he not? — but I’m also capable of being skeptical of my own skepticism: to give the other side some elbow room to show its good will, and to find it’s in earnest. The conversation Michael embarked upon may or may not result in some new understanding between McGinley’s & the LGBT community — it’ll take a few days to know which.

I really liked McGinley’s the two times I’d been in there before. I discovered it last November one day after writing at Side Street Espresso, and had a great lunch there before heading to Kaladi’s for more writing. At the time I thought I could make that into my normal Saturday routine: but learning of Sullivan’s connection to McGinley’s changed all that: I don’t want to support, with my money, people who are unsupportive of me. I’d like to think I could feel comfortable going there again, and that a peaceful dialogue of the likes Michael had with Mr. Lewis earlier today could bring that about. So I’m willing to let the attempt happen. I’m okay that we didn’t, in the end result, have a protest.

Especially because it meant that nice lady I met on the bus, who had planned to start her relaxing weekend with a glass of Riesling at McGinley’s, was able to enjoy it in perfect peace, without our chants distracting her from a well-earned chance to kick back.

Let’s hope something works out. And if it doesn’t… well. If we ever do need to protest McGinley’s, we’ll plan it better.

Thanks to everyone who turned out. And here’s the slideshow.

McGinley's protests protests

Protesting Mayor Sullivan's veto of AO 64

A friend sent along a copy of this press release from McGinley’s:

McGinley’s says Sullivan is only 10% owner, upset at Prop 64 protests

HIGHWATER, LLC, d/b/a/ McGinley’s Pub
Contact: Jack Lewis, Managing Partner
Phone: 907-444-3791

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MCGINLEY’S PUB SETS RECORD STRAIGHT ABOUT
OWNERSHIP AFTER RECENT DISRUPTION
Mayor Sullivan Only One Owner and Minority Shareholder of Pub

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA, Aug. 21, 2009 – Recently McGinley’s Pub, a local downtown restaurant and bar, has found itself as the attack point of a political controversy. On Monday, Aug. 17, a group of protestors caused major disruptions at the pub by picketing and blocking the entrance to patrons in response to the veto of a contentious ordinance by Mayor Dan Sullivan. News reports consistently note that Mayor Sullivan is the owner of McGinley’s Pub, but he is merely one owner and a minority shareholder.

McGinley’s Pub was established in 2006 and is owned by Highwater, LLC, which contains multiple owners. Mayor Sullivan is a 10 percent owner – a minority shareholder within the LLC. All the owners within the LLC come from various backgrounds and have diverse political philosophies. The political opinions of one owner do not reflect the opinions of the McGinley’s Pub as a whole.

“McGinley’s is a non-political establishment, an equal opportunity employer and a good corporate citizen. We [the owners] felt that based on the unruly actions of a few and slightly flawed media reports, that it was time to set the record straight,” McGinley’s Pub Managing Partner Jack Lewis said. “The pub enjoys a great cross section of Anchorage and the visiting population alike. It’s a great place to meet with friends and family to have fun.”

“We’d be happy to invite those picketers in for a Guiness and show them how the Irish mend their differences,” Lewis concludes.

Three points:
  1. Does McGinley’s include sexual orientation and gender identity as part of their “equal opportunity employer” official policy?
  2. LGBT people are “only 10%” of the population. It’s not actually an insignificant proportion — nor is Mr. Sullivan’s 10% minority ownership.
  3. In the words of the editor of Bent Alaska, “They can mend their differences by signing the Equality Works statement in support of the ordinance.”
Yep, that’ll work better than a Guinness for me.  Until then, I’ll buy my stout elsewhere.

* * *

It’s unclear at this point of McGinley’s is aware that a protest will be occurring there tonight.  As for the protest last Monday night, at the time I was present (until about 6:45) protesters had gone to McGinley’s once, and I saw no blocking of the entrance or “unruly” activity then.  Can’t speak for what may have gone on in the 45 minutes that the protest reportedly continued after I left (at which point protesters were in front of the Kaladi’s at the PAC, a block away from McGinley’s). — In any case, I hope that protesters tonight will remain peaceful and stay within the law — as they did during the entire time I was there on Monday.

I would like to note a couple of other things: first, that in anything I’ve posted about McGinley’s, I’ve always identified Mayor Sullivan as part owner of the establishment; second, that while I initiated a lot of the publicity for this protest (including posting it as an event on Facebook and at the LGBT meetup group), & will be present at the protest, I’m not actually its originator.  My info is that it’s been kicking around as an idea for a week or so, until another friend of mine posted on it today.

Protest inequality: Tonight at McGinley's

Protesting Mayor Sullivan's veto of AO 64

It’s a Friday night: time for a pub crawl!

So crawl your way over to McGinley’s Pub at 645 G Street: not to drink, but to protest Mayor Dan Sullivan’s veto this past Monday of the Anchorage equal rights ordinance. Sullivan is part-owner of McGinley’s: his patrons should know that Sullivan supports discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

McGinley’s Pub is in downtown Anchorage at the corner of G Street and 7th Avenue.  We’ll be protesting there beginning 6:30 PM.

According to protest organizers:

Folks who do drag and leather are encouraged to come dressed up. Couples are encouraged to have a kiss in. There might be a continuation later…, when the folks who are in the drag show at Myrna’s are able to come.

Grrlzlist elaborates:

Invite our allies & ask them to wear gender-neutral clothing or drag. What are they afraid of, a hunky guy in a Utilikilt & boots? It takes a het man who is really secure in his sexuality to wear a skirt!

Photos on this blog later tonight. Meanwhile, do as the man’s sign says: Boycott McGinley’s.

"Boycott McGinley's" -- of which equality-vetoer Mayor Dan Sullivan is part-owner
