Alaska Pride Conference & Youth Summit 2011: October 14-16 in Anchorage

Alaska Pride Conference & Youth Summit 2011Alaska Pride Conference 2011 and the first-ever Alaska statewide GLBT Youth Summit (Alaska youth 14-18) focusing on youth issues in Alaska will be held October 14-16 in Anchorage.

The Alaska Pride Conference is an annual day-long event held in Anchorage filled with workshops, speakers, vendors, and great food. The Alaska Pride Conference was founded in 1994 by Rebecca Rogers, former executive director of the Alaska AIDS Assistance Association (Four A’s), and community leaders Doug Frank and F. Ken Freedman, with the first conference designed to help heal the community after a bruising political debate in 1992/93 over whether to provide equal rights based on sexual orientation for Anchorage municipal employees. The first Pride Conference was described in a biography of Doug Frank for this year’s Alaska Pride Fest, of which Doug was Grand Marshal:

The initial question in the program was “ What would life be like, as an individual and as a community, if we lived in a land free of shame and full of pride? What if it gave us a strong and enduring sense of hope, inspiration and purpose? What if we felt totally connected to each other and the world around us?”

— questions which are just as timely today.

Nathan Belyeu of The Trevor ProjectThe event will feature keynote speaker Nathan Belyeu, Senior Education Manager of The Trevor Project.  The Trevor Project is aimed at ending suicide among LGBTQ youth by providing life-saving and life-affirming resources including a nationwide, 24/7 crisis intervention lifeline, digital community, and advocacy/educational programs.  Belyeu will provide an overview of the work The Trevor Project is doing and will discuss the vision of a future where the possibilities, opportunities and dreams are the same for all youth, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Pride Conference will also feature  four streams of workshops — Stepping Up, Stepping Out, Youth, and Fun/History — including two workshops presented by The Trevor Foundation, as well other workshops focusing on LGBT youth; a presentation on Alaska LGBT history led by Doug Frank; an update on the One Anchorage ballot initiative campaign; and a whole lot more — even a workshop presented by Bent Alaska!

The Alaska Pride Conference and Youth Summit is organized and sponsored by Identity, with other sponsors including Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line, the Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association (Four A’s), Mad Myrna’s, the Raven, Art Services North, the Imperial Court of All Alaska (ICOAA), Great Land Infusion Pharmacy, the Crazy Horse, ACLU of Alaska, Castle Megastor, Equality Works, the Pride Foundation, and Credit Union 1.  Media sponsors include the Anchorage Daily News, the Anchorage Press, and Bent Alaska.
