World AIDS Day 2011: Aiming for zero

World AIDS Day 2011: Aiming for zero

World AIDS Day is Thursday, December 1. The Four A’s and the Interior AIDS Association have organized events including candlelight vigils in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau.

World AIDS DayWorld AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1 each year around the world. It has become one of the most recognized international health days and a key opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services. Events including candlelight vigils are scheduled in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau.

More than one million people are living with HIV in the U.S., and more than one in five (21%) of them are unaware of their infection, according to estimates of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association (Four A’s) reports that there have been 1,394 reported cases of HIV infection in Alaska since 1982. In 2010, 38 Alaskans were newly diagnosed with HIV.

Internationally, the theme of World AIDS Day for 2011 to 2015, as decided by the World AIDS Campaign’s Global Steering Committee, is Getting to Zero: zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths. The Four A’s has joined in with this theme, declaring its own theme this year as Aim for Zero:

We are aiming for zero stigma, zero discrimination, zero risk, zero new cases and most importantly, zero deaths.

E.mo.tions by Lee Ward: First Friday at Interior AIDS AssociationUnique original artwork by Lee Ward will be on display for his solo exhibition “E.mo.tions,” presented as a First Friday opening at the Interior AIDS Association in Fairbanks.

People ask, “what do you paint?” Well its hard to describe. I suppose I just paint what I see and what I experience. Except usually in a funny, and a lot of times, an odd way. I love to paint, I paint to cool my nerves, relax, progress, and to forget about everything. For the brief time I get to sit down, throw on some music, and pick up a cup of paint, and finally paint; its that escape that I love. It’s what keeps me interested. It’s what makes me want to see what my next painting will look like, or what they will look like a year from now, or ten. So I paint what I see and feel, good or bad, everything around me is inspiration.

More of Lee Ward’s work can be seen at his website.

Come check it out. IAA is straight across 2nd from Gambardella’s in downtown Fairbanks.

  • Date/time: Friday, June 3, 5-8 PM
  • Place: Interior Aids Association, 709 W. 2nd (across from Gambardella’s), Fairbanks (see map)

“Inside and Out” and Creative Outreach at IAA

“Inside and Out” and Creative Outreach at IAA

The Fairbanks public is invited to “Inside and Out” tonight, a First Art Friday exhibit at Interior AIDS Association and part of their Creative Outreach program.

Inside and Out at IAAThis exhibition will include stories, posters, and artwork from agency consumers of the Interior AIDS Association. The presenters chose the title “Inside and Out” because some of them are telling stories or sharing concepts that have had to remain hidden for years, while others are sharing artwork that they have never shared outside of their immediate friends and families. There will likely be stories of recovery, struggles, prejudice, and unique original artwork.

Samuel Johnson has been working with people at IAA to put their stories together and consolidate artwork for the show.

“It won’t be artsy in the same way that other FF openings will be… it will have posters, written stories, pictures, and art that folks here have made. Some of it relates to the above themes, and some relates to the person’s own interest or efforts at drawing and art.”

The previous IAA story event on April Fools Friday showed digital stories related to HIV/STD Prevention. Check out Samuel’s cool digital story about finding IAA and joining the Creative Outreach project:

Inside and Out
Date/time: Friday, May 6, 6:00-8:00 PM
Location: Interior Aids Association, 709 W. 2nd, in downtown Fairbanks, across from Gambardella’s.
Cost of admission: Free
