Questions emerged over the weekend about missing funds from a fundraiser held last month to raise money for the charity Homes for Our Troops (HFOT). The fundraiser, dubbed “Home for an Alaskan Hero,” was intended to help complete building of a fully accessible home for Army Sergeant Latseen Benson of Chugiak, who lost his legs to an improvised explosive device (IED) in Iraq in November 2005. Latseen is the son of Alaska politician Diane Benson, an ally of the LGBT community.

The Imperial Court of All Alaska is the oldest and largest not-for-profit GLBTA organization in the state of Alaska. It awards scholarships to Alaska students each year and raise money for other charitable organizations in the state. Over the decades, ICOAA has raised over a million dollars through participation at fundraising events, benefits, titleholder Balls and functions. Funds raised are used for scholarships or turned back to gay, lesbian or community-wide nonprofit groups for their use.

Bent Alaska congratulates Emperor Cory Crowder and Empress Paige Langit for a successful and glorious reign, and looks forward to the reign of the Emperor and Empress-to-be.

Imperial Court of All Alaska (ICOAA)The Imperial Court of All Alaska College of Emperors and Empresses (ICOAA) is pleased to open the 2011 ICOAA Scholarship Program. Scholarship awards are granted for the 2011/2012 academic year. Awards are based on economic need, scholastic achievement, leadership ability and contributions to the lesbian/gay community. Application is offered to Alaska residents with preference given to members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and allied (GLBTA) community.

Over the years, ICOAA’s College of Emperors and Empresses has helped numerous GLBTA Alaskan scholars to further their educations, with awards including $25,000 to 26 scholarship recipients in 2010, $48,500 to 19 recipients in 2009, and $60,000 to 25 recipients in 2008.

To qualify for an ICOAA scholarship, the applicant:

  • must be an Alaska resident;
  • must be fully admitted to any college, university, trade or vocational school;
  • may be an incoming or continuing student;
  • must meet academic/trade program’s satisfactory academic progress criteria;
  • must have a cumulative GPA average of at least:
    2.0 for undergraduate/trade programs or
    3.0 for graduate/professional programs; and
  • must attend at least as a half-time student.

Complete applications must be received no later than July 31, 2011, so give yourself time to mail it in time! NO Hand Delivery! NO Exceptions! Scholarship awards will be announced September 1 at Coronation.

James Crump came to Alaska to find himself, and stayed in Alaska to share himself with us. His death on June 25 at Anchorage’s Pride parade was a blow not only to his family & friends, but also to our whole community. But just what is our community — and where do we go from here?

The Imperial Court of All Alaska (ICOAA) float won the Judges Choice Award at the Anchorage 4th of July festival and parade. Paige, Empress 38 of Alaska, graciously accepted Bent Alaska’s invitation to post her account of the day’s festivities; photos and additional comments by Bent Alaska contributor Mel Green.
