The Daily Tweets, 2010-01-22: U.S. Supreme Court sells out democracy to highest corporate bidders

The news that greeted me this morning: the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 activist decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which further extended the legal fiction that corporations are “persons” by granting their extremely deep special interest pockets pretty much unlimited “free speech” in campaign advertising. This is one I’ve been watching.  Democracy in [...]

The Daily Tweets, 2010-01-13: Haiti earthquake

Today's tweets were dominated by news of yesterday's magnitude 7 earthquake in Haiti, the idiotic statement about the earthquake by Christianist Pat Robertson, & the Prop 8 trial in California.

Helping Haiti (& telling Pat Robertson to STFU)

How can we help the people of Haiti in the aftermath of yesterday's devastating earthquake? By sending them assistance -- not by blaming them, as Christianist lackwit Pat Robertson so predictably does.

How to be a friend to an accused serial rapist

Accused serial rapist Anthony Rollins is an Anchorage police officer whose alleged crimes were perpetrated against at least 6 women while he was on duty. Members of his church, Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, are packing the court in droves. Are they helping him face the consequences of any crimes he committed? Or are they merely showing up in Christianist solidarity?

Q & A: What happens when you click “Volunteer” at the Alaskans for Parental Rights website?

Q. What happens when you click "Volunteer" at the Alaskans for Parental Rights website? A. You get taken to the “Volunteer” page for the “Yes on 8” website. Yes on 8 is the campaign in California to deny the equal right to marry to same-sex couples. Here's further evidence of linkages showing how Alaska’s Christianist right is dependent upon financial, organizational, and ideological support from outside the state.

James Dobson’s God is a child abuser, & so is Jerry Prevo’s

Max Blumenthal's new book Republican Gomorrah talks among other things about corporal punishment in Christianist practices of child discipline -- practices taught by Focus on the Family leader James Dobson and, at least in 1985, Anchorage Baptist Temple pastor Jerry Prevo.

Waking from the grey

The grey is a term I have for one of my modes of experiencing depression.  I wrote about it three years ago: The grey is like a great grey landscape of bleakness, just dust & stones. Emotionally dead: I can’t rouse me, nor can anyone else, to laughter or fun, certainly not joy; but nor can [...]

Christianist, defined

I first used this term in the post “The new Carrie Prejean?” I’m using often enough that it seems helpful to break the definition I used there out into a separate post. Christianist is a term I first heard from Atlantic Monthly blogger Andrew Sullivan — a useful term that to me conveys not Christiantity as [...]
