Another story on Bent Alaska -- in this case, the letter of a transwoman, a former Marine, to the Anchorage Assembly. An incredible document of the discrimination faced by transfolk:

Reminds me why the name 'Identity' works for more than just gay and lesbian folk. Regarding another thread entirely, the Center's name was changed for a number of reasons. Inclusion does not mean we diminish pride in ourselves. We are all on the bus now, not under the wheels.

In '79 we had a sit in, organized by then MCC minister Gary Wilson, in a restaurant here on Minnesota south of Benson (still there with a different name, I think it was a Flippers then), when the manager refused to apologize for jumping on a woman who was a member of the congregation, and had done nothing more than use the womens' bathroom, dressed in jeans and a flannel shirt, with short hair. The manager, who apparently was as confused as he was irate had said 'I don't care HOW you're dressed when you come in here, don't go in the womens' bathroom'.
