Going the long way

Sunday, 28 May 2006: Going the long way

I’ve found that just by taking a longer walking route to someplace you need or want to go anyway can make a huge difference. I got to Kaladi Brothers at Title Wave almost every Sunday, a walk that by the most direct route up Arctic & Spenard takes around 2,000 steps. But by taking the Chester Creek Trail to Westchester Lagoon, & then the trail that parallels the offramp from Minnesota to West High, more than doubles the steps. So the trip there & back again easily got me over 10,000 steps.

I’ve now established a goal not only of keeping at least the gains I’ve made — of 7,500+ over baseline (about 16,500 steps) at least four days a week — but of also going at least 10,000 steps per day on the other three days. It’s easier than I had ever thought, just by integrating extra steps or exercise into things I would be doing already: getting off one or two bus stops early, taking a more circuitous route, etc.

Day total: 10,590 steps.
